Luke Combs shared a sweet message he wrote to his two young sons.
The “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” artist and his wife, Nicole Combs, welcomed their firstborn child, son Tex Lawrence Combs, on Father’s Day in June 2022. Less than one year later, they announced that Nicole was pregnant with Baby No. 2, another boy, Beau Lee Combs, who was born in August 2023. Nicole recently responded to an Instagram user who wanted to know whether she and her husband had plans for Baby No. 3, saying that “it would be a bit hard in the 2 bedroom house but maybe when we move into the bigger house. Who knows!”
Since becoming a dad, Combs has been sharing snippets of unreleased songs inspired by his kids. He’s posted sneak peeks of “Huntin’ By Yourself,” “Plant a Seed,” and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” and announced that “The Man He Sees in Me” will release on Thursday (June 6) at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT.
“To my boys,” Combs wrote in the note to Tex and Beau. He posted it on Instagram on Tuesday evening (June 4). “First and foremost, I will always love you, no matter what. With this song, I want you to know that even though I’m not perfect, I try my hardest every day to be the best version of myself for you both. I’ll make mistakes along the way and some days you’ll be sick of your old man I’m sure, but dang we’ll have some fun, too. I can’t wait to see what you both turn out to be like and I hope someday down the road I get to watch you and your kids do the same. Love, Dad.”
Combs started teasing “The Man He Sees in Me” earlier this year, including with an acoustic rendition he delivered while he was on “dad duty.” Combs wrote the sentimental song with songwriter Josh Phillips. He shared the lyrics in the comments:
“I hope he never finds out that I didn’t hang the moon/ And I never scared a monster out the closet in his room/ Someday between him leaving home and driving on my knee/ Maybe I’ll finally be/ The man he sees in me/ I know he’s gonna find out that I didn’t hang the moon/ There never was a monster in the closet of his room/ Someday when he’s driving home with his son on his knee/ I hope he’s trying to be the man he sees in me/ The man he sees in me”
Since posting teasers of “dad songs” on his social media pages, Combs has seemingly hinted at an album full of songs about parenthood in the works. His most recent full-length album is Gettin’ Old, an 18-track collection that followed 2022’s Growin’ Up. Gettin’ Old arrived in March 2023, and included “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old,” “Love You Anyway,” “Take You With Me,” “5 Leaf Clover,” his award-winning cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” and more. Most recently, Combs released the first track from the star-studded Twisters album, “Ain’t No Love In Oklahoma.”
